Harold Arlen was born Hyman Arluck in Buffalo, New York in 1905. He wrote songs with lyricist E.Y. Harburg, including 'That Old Black Magic' and 'Ac-cent-tchu-ate The Positive.'
In 1939, Arlen and Harburg wrote 'Over The Rainbow' for the film 'The Wizard of Oz.' The song became one of his most enduring works, though its creation was followed by a legal dispute over songwriting credits.
Arlen's catalog includes hundreds of songs, many of which became standards. He also collaborated with lyricists like Ira Gershwin and Ted Koehler, and his songs were performed by vocalists such as Judy Garland and Lena Horne.
