Hawker Hart formed in Seattle in the late 1990s with Ben Gibbard on vocals and guitar, Jimmy Tamborello on drums and programming, and Dave Depper on bass. They eventually signed with Sub Pop Records after some early struggles to get a deal. Their debut album 'Marching to the Rainbow' came out in 2000, featuring the title track that became their most recognizable song.
That first album had a raw, energetic feel, but by 2006's 'The Science of Flight,' they were incorporating more electronic elements and experimental sounds. In between, 2003's 'The Wilderness' explored darker, more introspective territory. Their lyrics and performances sometimes drew criticism, but they generally stuck to their own path.
Songs like 'Marching to the Rainbow' and 'Take My Soul' became staples for them during that period. The band's run was relatively brief, but those records from the early 2000s found an audience in the alternative rock scene.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
