Editor's note

Hawthorne Heights and the Ohio post-hardcore sound

A Dayton band that shaped the mid-2000s scene and kept going after losing a key member.

If you want to hear their early sound, 'Pens And Needles' is the one. For something later, try 'Flux Capacitor'.

They arrived right when that specific blend of melodic vocals and raw guitars was taking over. 'Pens And Needles' is a perfect example of what that era sounded like. The band's story also became part of the scene's history after 2007.

They formed in Dayton and put out 'The Silence in Black and White' in 2004. After their second album, the death of guitarist Casey Calvert changed everything. They've released several more records since, like 'Fragile Future' and 'Bad Frequencies', with a different lineup.

Hawthorne Heights formed in Dayton, Ohio, and released their debut album 'The Silence in Black and White' in 2004. Their second album, 'If Only You Were Lonely,' came out two years later. The band's songs like 'Pens And Needles' and 'Alone' fit into the post-hardcore sound that was popular in the mid-2000s.

In 2007, the band's guitarist and vocalist Casey Calvert died from an accidental drug overdose. Hawthorne Heights continued with lineup changes, releasing albums including 'Fragile Future' in 2008 and 'Bad Frequencies' a decade later. Their current members are JT Woodruff, Micah Carlile, Matt Ridenour, and Chris Popadak.

Some of their later tracks include 'Control Alt Delete' and 'Is This What You Wanted?' They've put out six studio albums total, with 'Zero' arriving in 2013 and 'Skeletons' three years earlier.
