Editor's note

Darren Hayes, from Savage Garden to solo pop

The Australian singer-songwriter who found global fame with Savage Garden before carving out his own path.

For the Savage Garden sound, "Truly Madly Deeply" is the touchstone. For his solo voice, try "Insatiable" or a later track like "Black Out The Sun."

Hayes gave pop music some of its most recognizable late-90s moments with Savage Garden's "Truly Madly Deeply." His solo work, like the track "Insatiable," showed a different side, more personal and less bound to the duo's polished sound. He's one of those voices that connects a specific pop era to what came after.

He first surfaced in the mid-90s with Savage Garden, which put out two big albums. After the duo ended in 2001, he started releasing solo material, including the 2007 double album "This Delicate Thing We've Made." His music has kept appearing through the 2000s and 2010s.

Archive material and source history

Darren Hayes was born in Brisbane, Australia in 1972. He first gained attention in the mid-90s as half of the pop duo Savage Garden with Daniel Jones. Their self-titled debut album in 1997 produced international hits like "I Want You" and "Truly Madly Deeply," followed by the successful "Affirmation" album in 1999.

After Savage Garden ended in 2001, Hayes began releasing solo material. His third solo album "This Delicate Thing We've Made" came out in 2007 and included the track "Black Out The Sun." Other songs from his solo catalog include "Insatiable," "So Beautiful," and "Step Into The Light."

Before forming Savage Garden, Hayes had been involved with an electro-industrial project called Savior Machine in the early 1990s. He's continued to release music as a solo artist in the years since, with albums appearing periodically through the 2000s and 2010s.
