H.E. formed in Lisbon in 1987 with Filipe Mendes on vocals, Luis Trip on guitar, Paulo Marinho on bass, and Carlos Cruz on drums. They released their debut album 'Feto' the following year, playing shows around Portugal's underground scene. Some listeners found their early material too dark or introspective, but they kept at it.
Their second album 'Chama' came out in 1991 and included 'O Homem, a Pedra e o Monte,' which became a major hit in Portugal. The song's success brought them wider attention, though some critics questioned the meaning behind their lyrics. H.E. maintained that they were just writing about human nature.
They put out several more albums over the next decade or so, including 'Porta das Flores' in 1994, 'Amor' in 1997, and 'Máquina' in 2004. Other songs like 'Página Dois' and 'Não Te Amo Rap' also found their audience. The band's sound mixed straightforward rock with some atmospheric and progressive touches.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
