Editor's note

Head Murray's pop-rock journey from London to Bangkok

A London band that found global fame with a Chess musical hit in the 1980s.

For a quick sense of their range, try "Dearest Anne" or "Boats Away" from their top songs. They're not just the Bangkok hit.

They're mostly remembered for "One Night in Bangkok," the 1984 single from the musical Chess that went worldwide. That track, along with songs like "Sorry I Love You" and "Say It Ain't So, Joe," defined their mid-80s moment. Their sound blended pop, rock, and jazz across a couple decades of recording.

Head Murray formed in London in the mid-1970s, releasing their self-titled debut in 1976 and Hotel of the Damned in 1978. Their big break came with "One Night in Bangkok" in 1984, followed by lineup changes after Paul Young left in 1985. They kept going through the mid-1990s with shifts in personnel like Mark King on bass and Mark Brzezicki on drums.

Young left the band the following year to go solo, and they released Liberation in 1985.

After Young's departure, Mark King played bass for the band from 1985 to 1990, and Mark Brzezicki was their drummer from 1990 to 1995. Their sound mixed pop, rock, and jazz, and they kept recording through the mid-1990s.
