Heavenly formed in Oxford in 1990 with Amelia Fletcher on vocals, Rob Pursey on guitar, Peter Momtchiloff on bass, Dare Mason on drums, and Cathy Rogers on keyboards. Their debut album 'Heavenly vs. Satan' came out in 1991, followed by 'Le Jardin' in 1994 which included the single 'Ode to Joy.' They kept releasing albums through the 1990s, with titles like 'Motel Suicide,' 'The Decline and Fall of Heavenly,' 'Popstars in Heaven,' and 'Heavenly in Space.'
Their songs like 'P.u.n.k. Girl,' 'Ashen Paradise,' and 'Defender' had a particular sound that mixed pop with something dreamier and a bit offbeat. They were known for being unconventional in how they approached both their music and their public presence, which sometimes created friction with the industry around them.
The band stopped in 1999. Their records from that decade, with their blend of melodic pop and ethereal touches, found an audience and have remained with listeners since.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
