Hedningarna formed in Sweden in the early 1990s with Anders Stake on fiddle, Hållbus Totte Mattsson on nyckelharpa, and Björn Tollin on percussion. Their first album came out in 1994, followed by 'Kaksi!' in 1996 and 'Trä' in 1998. The group worked with musicians from Mali and India on 'Kaksi!', while 'Trä' leaned more heavily on older Swedish folk instruments and vocal styles.
Hedningarna said they meant to show the woman's resilience against patriarchal oppression.
After disbanding in 2004, they played a few reunion shows in 2019. You might have heard their music in 'The Lord of the Rings' or 'Game of Thrones.' Other tracks like 'Call Me,' 'Drafur Och Gildur,' and 'Pornopolka' round out their catalog.
