Alleen die brief is bij haar terug gekomen

Hoewel ik wel een omweg heb genomen
En wat onzeker bij mijn voordeur heb gestaan
En mijn vrouw was allerminst verbijsterd
Wat dat betreft is het een fraaie schat
Mijn afwezigheid die had haar niet geteisterd
Ze vroeg alleen of ik mijn sigaretten had
Daarop had ik geen zinnig woord te zeggen
Waarom had zij geen woede opgekropt
