Background notes

Archive material and source history

Helder Goes formed in 1978 with three friends: Helder Raimundo on vocals, José Conde on guitar, and Manuel Marques on bass. They started playing rock and roll around small venues in Portugal, working through the usual early struggles of a new band.

In 1986, they released the album "Oitava Maravilha," and the title track became a national hit. The song's melody stuck with people, turning into something of an anthem. Their lyrics sometimes touched on social themes, which drew some criticism at the time.

They had put out a debut album called "A Lenda dos Cinco Reis" in 1982, but it was "Oitava Maravilha" that defined them for most listeners.
