Hélis Emerich and Alexandre Pires started playing together as teenagers in Belo Horizonte. Their first album came out in 1984, and it included 'Saudade Dessa Menina,' which became their best-known song. They've recorded more than a dozen studio albums since then.
Their music often deals with love and longing, with songs like 'A Gente Vai Se Amar' and 'A Lua Me Disse' built around acoustic guitar arrangements. They've worked in a space between Brazilian folk and pop, and other artists including Milton Nascimento have covered their material.
In the early 1990s, there was a plagiarism accusation about one of their singles. Both members have also dealt with personal issues, Hélis with addiction and Alexandre with tax problems. They've kept recording through it, with songs like 'Caipira Americana' and 'Deixa Miá' appearing on later albums.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
