Hell Militia formed in 1999 with Lord Kaiaphas on vocals, Black Winds on guitar, BlackGoat Eclipse on bass, and Hellhammer on drums. They came out of the Canadian underground with a sound that pulled from black metal, death metal, and grindcore. Their first album, simply called 'Hell Militia,' arrived in 2003.
Their lyrics dealt with violence, blasphemy, and misanthropy, which often drew criticism. The song 'Shoot Knife Strangle Beat / Crucify' became particularly known for its graphic content. They followed up with 'Evil Strikes Again' in 2006 and 'Shadows of the Black Tower' in 2009.
They developed a cult following within extreme metal circles despite, or perhaps because of, the regular backlash against their music and performances.
