Archive material and source history
Henricão, born Henrique Pereira Costa, came up in Rio de Janeiro's Cordovil neighborhood. He started out singing and writing songs, influenced by the samba and pagode sounds around him. In the mid-1990s, he joined the band Bezerra da Silva, which gave him some early recognition.
His solo debut came in 1998 with an album simply called 'Henricão.' That record included 'Ingratidão do Nozinho,' a song about betrayal that became his best-known work. The track's straightforward lyrics about a man wronged by someone he trusted connected with listeners.
Henricão kept recording after that, putting out albums like 'Quem Vai Querer Ser Feliz?' in 2000 and 'Deixa O Mundo Girar' in 2003. He worked with musicians like guitarist Leandro Sapucay and cavaquinho player Marquinhos China. In 2002, he was arrested for possession of illegal substances, an incident that drew attention but didn't stop him from making music.
