Archive material and source history

Henry Hall led the Gleneagles Hotel Band in the 1920s and 1930s, playing dance music that became popular in ballrooms. In 1932, they recorded "The Teddy Bears' Picnic," a song based on a children's book that became widely known. Hall was born in 1898.

During the Second World War, Hall and his band performed for troops and helped with fundraising. After the war, their popularity declined as musical styles changed. Hall kept performing and recording until he retired in the 1960s.

Their recording of "The Teddy Bears' Picnic" remains their best-known work, along with songs like "Hush Hush Hush Here Comes the Bogey man" and "Who's Afraid Of The Big Bad Wolf."
