Henry Purcell was born in London in 1659 and showed musical talent early on. His father was a musician in the Chapel Royal, and Purcell later studied under composer John Blow. By 1682, he was appointed Composer for the King's Musick, writing music for the court of King Charles II.
Purcell's opera 'Dido and Aeneas' premiered in 1689 and remains his most famous work. The aria 'When I Am Laid In Earth' from that opera, often called Dido's Lament, has become one of the most recognizable pieces in classical music. Other works like 'Music For a While' and 'Fairest Isle' continue to be performed regularly.
He died in 1695 at age 36, leaving behind a substantial body of work that includes operas, anthems, and instrumental pieces. His music represents some of the finest examples of English Baroque composition.
