Herjalf formed in Norway in 2003 as a progressive metal band. Their lineup included Aadne "Adde" Elgass on vocals and rhythm guitar, Kenneth "Hybris" Kårstad on lead guitar, Ronny "Rone" Sæbø on bass, and Frode "Frodden" Alnæs on drums. They released their self-titled debut that same year.
Their second album, 2006's Ecstasy, became their breakthrough. The title track was a twelve-minute piece that helped define their sound. They followed it with Hymn to the Absu in 2008, The Storm in 2010, Warhorn in 2013, and Ethereal Destruction in 2016.
Their music incorporated classical and folk elements, sometimes with Arabic touches. Songs like Forgotten, Iduna, and Northern Wind showed their range.
