Background notes

Archive material and source history

The Hermanos Moncada came out of Chimbote in the 1960s, a group of brothers, Luis, Félix, and Eladio, who started playing at local festivals. They mixed Peruvian rhythms with Colombian cumbia and Mexican boleros, which caught on in their hometown and then further out.

In 1969 they put out "A Ti Chimbote," a song about the city they were from. It became a hit across Peru, the kind of track people knew the words to and danced to. They had another one called "Ausencia de Mi Madre" that also stayed in rotation.

They kept playing through the 1970s, doing shows in other parts of Latin America and Europe. Some critics at the time looked down on cumbia, but the brothers kept at it, and their records kept coming out.
