Hermínio came up in the Mangueira favela of Rio de Janeiro, where he started performing in local bars and festivals in the late 1970s. His debut album 'Nunca Mais' arrived in 1981, featuring the song 'Mulher do Povo'.
That track, 'Mulher do Povo,' became a kind of signature for him. Its lyrics spoke about women from marginalized communities, and the melody had a way of sticking with people across Brazil.
He kept writing songs that touched on social issues, which sometimes drew criticism from conservative corners. But he kept at it, releasing albums like 'Terra do Sol' in 1983 and 'Amazônia Brasil' in 1985.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
