Hermínio Bello de Carvalho was born in 1938 in the sertão region of Pernambuco. He later moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he developed his musical style drawing from samba, baião, and folk traditions. His 1967 debut album 'Canta o Brasil' included 'Estrada do sertão,' a song about life in the backlands that became widely known in Brazil.
He continued writing songs that addressed the experiences of marginalized people, including tracks like 'Brinco de princesa' and 'Mudando de conversa.'
Carvalho worked with musicians including Dominguinhos on guitar, Sivuca on accordion, and Zé Ramalho on vocals. He released more than twenty studio albums over his career, with titles like 'Leão do Norte' in 1970 and 'Serra da Catingueira' in 1980.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
