Archive material and source history
Hermínio Rodrigues came up in Cabo Frio, a coastal city in Rio de Janeiro, where he grew up around samba and bossa nova. His early listening included João Gilberto and Dorival Caymmi, and that grounding shows in the way he approached melody and rhythm.
In the mid-1960s he put out a self-titled debut album that mixed samba and bossa nova with some psychedelic rock touches. It did well enough that his next record, 'A Vida É Assim', landed a national hit with 'Tudo Bem'. That song became the thing most people knew him by.
Rodrigues sometimes wrote lyrics that got him into trouble with different sides of Brazil's political tensions in the 1970s. He was arrested once after a demonstration, and for a while censorship and legal issues made it harder to put music out.
