Herois de um Novo Day formed in the late 1970s in Salvador, Bahia, with Jurandir Santana as their vocalist and lyricist. Their music pulled from Brazilian rhythms like samba and axé alongside rock and pop melodies. The band's 1982 self-titled debut and 1985's 'Um Novo Dia' album gave them a platform.
Their song 'Um Novo Dia' became associated with Brazil's transition to democracy in the 1980s.
They continued releasing albums through the 1990s, including 1996's 'Caminhos do Coração.' While the lineup changed over time, Santana remained the consistent presence. Other musicians who played with the band included guitarist Nana Vasconcellos and bassist Fred Martins.
