Herrikoiak formed in 1975 with members including Jose Mari Iparragirre, Javier Muguruza, Mikel Laboa, Mikel Pagola, and Xabier Lete. They worked with traditional Basque folk material but approached it with a contemporary ear, releasing a series of self-titled albums between 1977 and 1981.
Their songs often dealt with themes of identity and place, and 'Agur ene lürra' became particularly well-known for its expression of connection to the Basque Country. The group's lyrics sometimes drew official attention during their active years.
Herrikoiak stopped performing together in 1983. Their recordings, including songs like 'Agur etxeko-anderea' and 'Agur Euskal', remain part of the region's musical landscape.
