Hi-Standard formed in 1991 in Yokosuka, Japan as a trio with Ken Yokoyama on vocals and guitar, Norihito Momoi on bass and vocals, and Takeshi Ueda on drums. Their debut album 'Growing Up' came out in 1994, followed by 'Angry Fist' in 1996 and 'Making the Road' in 1999.
Their cover of 'I Can't Help Falling In Love With You' from the 'Making the Road' album reached listeners outside Japan. Other songs like 'Dear My Friend' and 'Sunshine Baby' showed their mix of punk energy and melodic hooks.
After Momoi's 2000 arrest for marijuana possession, the band took a break before returning with 'Love and Hate' in 2001. They disbanded in 2003 while still popular, with the members moving on to other projects.
