Highway 101

Highway 101 formed in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in 1986 with Paulette Carlson on vocals, guitarist Jack Daniels, bassist Mark "Doc" Martin, and drummer Curtis Stone. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1989, followed by "The Road Less Traveled" in 1990. That second album included "Barely Beating Broken Heart," which became a crossover hit on country and adult contemporary charts.

Carlson's direct songwriting gave the band its character. Other songs like "Cry Cry Cry" and "Do You Love Me Just Say Yes" had a plain-spoken quality that felt grounded, not flashy. They put out several more albums through the mid-1990s, including "Eclipse" in 1992 and "Living in Black and White" in 1994.

Their sound worked with country radio formats but kept a straightforward rock band setup. They recorded less frequently after the 1990s, though compilations like "Fifteen Years of Highway 101" in 2004 and "Highway 101 Reloaded" in 2011 kept their earlier material in circulation.
