Histoire Noire

Histoire Noire formed in Paris in the late 1990s with a lineup that included vocalist Alexandre Laurent, guitarist François Lepage, drummer Jean Dubois, and violinist Isabelle Giroux. Their debut album, 'A Man Cloaked in Black,' came out in 2001 and established their sound, which leaned on atmospheric guitar work and Giroux's violin to create a somber, textured backdrop. Songs like 'De Kracht Van De Zwarte Wil' and 'La Château Noire De La Solitude' typified this approach, with lyrics that often dwelled on darker themes.

They followed with 'The Obsidian Chamber' in 2004 and 'Echoes of the Damned' in 2007, the latter incorporating some classical and electronic elements. By 2010's 'The Unveiling,' they had returned to a more direct style. Their live shows were known for being intense and visually stark, which, along with their lyrical content, occasionally drew criticism.

Over their first decade, Histoire Noire built a dedicated following without much mainstream fuss. They operated on their own terms, releasing music that felt cohesive and deliberate, even when it shifted slightly from album to album. The band's name itself became a song title on one of their records, a quiet nod to their own mythology.
