Hit Podre formed in Madrid in the early 1980s around vocalist Alvaro Urquijo and guitarist Enrique Urquijo, with bassist Javier Molina and drummer Antonio Vega. Their debut album 'Golpes Bajos' came out in 1983 and included the song 'Why Don't You Call Me Tonight?' which became their most recognizable track.
That song's melancholy tone and themes of longing drew some criticism at the time for being too pessimistic, but it also found a dedicated audience. The band released several more albums through the 1980s, including 'Dejarte Ya' in 1985 and 'Tierras Extrañas' in 1988.
Their music stayed largely within a particular vein of Spanish rock from that period, built around introspective lyrics and a consistent lineup. They never became a mainstream commercial force, but 'Why Don't You Call Me Tonight?' remains the song people remember.
