H.M.S. Pinafore is a comic opera by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan that premiered in London in 1878. It's a nautical story about mistaken identities and social class, with characters like Captain Corcoran and Little Buttercup. The opening number 'We Sail The Ocean Blue' sets the tone for the whole piece.
Gilbert and Sullivan wrote it as one of their Savoy Operas, following the success of The Sorcerer. The original production ran for over 500 performances, which was unusual for that time. Some people thought it made fun of the British Navy too much, but audiences kept coming.
Over time, different companies have recorded and staged it. The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company did an early recording in 1929, and more recent productions have come from places like Glyndebourne. The opera still gets performed regularly because the songs work and the social satire hasn't really dated.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
