Hoagy Carmichael was born Hoagland Howard Carmichael in Bloomington, Indiana in 1899. He studied music at Indiana University before moving to New York City in the 1920s, where he worked as a pianist and composer.
In 1927, Carmichael wrote the melody for 'Stardust' with lyricist Mitchell Parish. The song became one of the most recorded compositions in American music. He also wrote 'Georgia On My Mind' and 'Heart and Soul,' among hundreds of other songs.
Carmichael collaborated with musicians like Bix Beiderbecke, Benny Goodman, and Mildred Bailey. His music appeared in films and Broadway productions throughout his career.
