Courtney Love's band moved from abrasive punk to radio-ready rock across three distinct albums.
If you want to hear the band's two poles, put on 'Violet' and then 'Celebrity Skin.' That's the whole story right there.
Hole mattered because they channeled female rage and vulnerability into songs that felt both dangerous and catchy. 'Live Through This' gave us 'Doll Parts' and 'Violet,' anthems that turned personal anguish into something you could shout along to. Later, 'Celebrity Skin' showed they could write a gleaming rock hit without losing their edge.
They started in Los Angeles in 1989 with the noisy 'Pretty on the Inside.' By 1994, 'Live Through This' defined their sound, and 1998's 'Celebrity Skin' marked a shift toward a cleaner production. The band returned much later with 'Nobody's Daughter' in 2010.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
