Homens de Marte formed in São Paulo in 1989 with vocalist Rick Ferreira, guitarist Bruno Maia, bassist Paula Toller, and drummer Cláudio Souza. Their debut album 'Terra' came out in the early 1990s, mixing experimental rock with touches of psychedelic and Brazilian folk music. The song 'Acordando Os Deuses' from that period drew criticism from some religious groups for its lyrics, but the band kept recording as they were.
They put out several albums through the 1990s and early 2000s, including 'Marte' and 'Sol'. Tracks like 'Água E Vinho', 'Cena De Cinema', and 'Incondicional' show their range from moody ballads to more driving rock. Ferreira has been the consistent member through lineup changes, and they've worked with artists like Naná Vasconcelos, Arnaldo Antunes, and Marisa Monte at different points.
Their sound doesn't sit neatly in one category, pulling from rock, funk, electronica, and world music influences. The band's catalog has found listeners who respond to its particular blend of textures and Ferreira's distinctive vocal presence.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
