Editor's note

Hong Dae Kwang's quiet, steady songs

A Korean singer-songwriter with eight songs in the catalog, including 'It Shows' and 'Boom Boom'.

If you need a place to start, 'It Shows' and 'My Room' frame his approach well. They're simple, specific, and don't try to be anything else.

Hong Dae Kwang's catalog holds a particular kind of quiet, steady presence. Songs like 'It Shows' and 'Boom Boom' suggest a writer comfortable with straightforward emotional delivery. There's no grand mythology here, just a handful of tracks that do their work plainly.

The available history is thin, but the songs themselves trace a consistent thread. From 'It Shows' to 'Missing You', the focus stays on direct, unadorned sentiment.

Hong Dae Kwang was born on September 25, 1980. He started out as a member of the boy band 1TYM in 2004, then went solo a couple years later. His second single, 'Missing You,' came out in 2008 and did well on charts in South Korea and elsewhere in Asia. That song, along with others like 'I Feel You' and 'Take My Hand,' established him as a singer with a soulful vocal style.

In 2011, he had surgery for a vocal cord polyp and took a break from singing. He recovered and returned to performing. A couple years after that, he was involved in an assault case but was acquitted. He kept making music through it, releasing songs like 'Hug Me' in 2014 and 'Thank You' in 2016.

He works as a solo artist. His music tends to be straightforward pop ballads and mid-tempo tracks, with 'Missing You' being the one that stuck around the longest in people's memories.
