Hora Social Adventista formed in Brazil in the late 1960s. They started by playing traditional hymns and gospel songs for Adventist church gatherings, but began working Brazilian rhythms into their music. Their first album came out in 1971.
That debut record included "O Galo e a Galinha," a song that became widely known in Adventist communities. Other tracks like "Comadre" and "O Leiteiro" showed their approach of setting faith-oriented lyrics to accessible, locally-rooted arrangements.
Some church figures at the time questioned whether bringing those rhythms into worship music was appropriate. The group kept recording through the 1970s, with Paulo Cesar Baruk handling lead vocals and composition.
