Editor's note

Hot Mulligan's anxious pop-punk from Lansing

A Michigan band that mixes emo energy with personal lyrics, named after a Caddyshack character.

If you want to get what they're about, listen to 'Equip Sunglasses' and 'Dary'. They're both good examples of how their sound works.

Hot Mulligan's songs like 'Equip Sunglasses' and 'BCKYRD' capture that specific feeling of being young and restless in the Midwest. They've got that pop-punk drive, but the lyrics dig into anxiety and small-town life in a way that feels real. The band formed in Lansing in 2014, and their name comes from a minor character in Caddyshack, which tells you something about their sense of humor.

They started with the EP 'Opportunities' in 2016, then put out their first full album 'Pilot' in 2018. 'I Fell in Love with Princess Peach' came in 2021, showing their mix of emo and indie rock. There was a lineup change with Chris Castagno joining on drums, and they paused touring in 2022 before returning to shows.

Hot Mulligan formed in Lansing, Michigan in 2014, taking their name from a character in the movie Caddyshack. The original lineup included Tadesh Hetzler on vocals and guitar, Chris Freeman on guitar, Ryan Malicay on bass, and Spencer Chamberlain on drums. They put out their debut EP 'Opportunities' in 2016, which caught some attention and led to a deal with No Sleep Records.

Their first full album 'Pilot' came out in 2018, followed by 'I Fell in Love with Princess Peach' in 2021. Songs like 'Equip Sunglasses' and 'BCKYRD' show their mix of pop-punk energy with more personal, sometimes anxious lyrics. The band's sound pulls from emo and indie rock without settling into one category.

At some point, Chris Castagno replaced Spencer Chamberlain on drums. In 2022, the band faced allegations from a former fan, which they denied after pausing their tour schedule. They've since resumed playing shows.
