Archive material and source history

Hot Tuna started in 1969 when Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, both coming from Jefferson Airplane, decided to focus on blues. They brought in drummer Sammy Piazza and saxophonist Will Scarlett for their self-titled debut album in 1970. That record had a raw feel, with Kaukonen's guitar work front and center on tracks like 'Death Don't Have No Mercy' and '99 Year Blues'.

Their live shows became their calling card, known for stretching songs into long improvisational jams. The 1972 album 'Burgers' captured some of that energy. Over time, their sound opened up to include folk and jazz touches alongside the blues foundation, as heard on songs like 'Easy Now' and 'I Am The Light Of This World'.

Kaukonen and Casady kept the band going through various lineup changes and outside pressures. They've put out more than a dozen studio albums, but the core has always been those two musicians exploring American roots music on their own terms.
