A Mississippi-born force whose recordings for Chess Records defined primal electric blues.
For a quick sense of his energy, try 'Tell Me' or 'Just Like I Treat You.' They're wired directly to the ground he came from.
He came out of Mississippi with a voice that sounded like it had been dragged through gravel. Tracks like 'Just Like I Treat You' had a primal force built around his howling delivery and sharp guitar work. It wasn't polished, but it didn't need to be.
He started playing harmonica and guitar in the Delta, picking up the local blues tradition. In the 1950s, he signed with Chess Records and put out 'Moanin' at Midnight,' which announced his raw style. By the late 1960s, he was cutting albums like 'The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions,' showing his sound could hold up in different settings.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
