Hu Yang Lin

Hu Yang Lin began performing in the early 1990s, a period when Chinese music was changing quickly. The band's vocalist and songwriter, Yang Lin, led a group that included multi-instrumentalist Wang Lei, bassist Zhang Yong, and drummer Wang Wei. They worked with traditional folk elements but didn't treat them as museum pieces, which sometimes drew criticism from purists who preferred a stricter approach.

Their song "Chen'ai" became particularly well-known, a ballad about love and regret that resonated with listeners. The band recorded several albums, including "The Soul of the Hu Yang Tree" and "The Sound of the Horse-Head Fiddle," which mixed folk instrumentation with contemporary arrangements. They occasionally collaborated with larger ensembles like the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.

Over time, their sound incorporated more influences from Western folk and classical music while keeping a foundation in Chinese tradition. They maintained a relatively stable lineup through the years, with Yang Lin remaining the central creative figure. The music avoided easy categorization, sitting somewhere between preservation and reinterpretation.
