Hugo Pantoja was the frontman of Axé Blond, a Brazilian band that formed in 1983 with musicians including Tony Botelho and Carlinhos Brown. They came out of Salvador, Bahia, and their first album in 1985 helped establish their sound, which mixed Bahian percussion with pop melodies. One of their songs from that period, 'Brinquedo Certo,' appears among Pantoja's most remembered tracks.
Axé Blond's music drew from samba, reggae, and funk, and their live shows were known for being energetic. Pantoja sang on recordings like 'Bambolê' and 'Festa de Axé' during the late 1980s. The band's lineup at different times included Luiz Caldas on drums and João Jorge on bass.
Later songs like 'Jovem Amor (Ao Vivo)' and 'Quero Te Ver Feliz' kept Pantoja's voice in circulation even as the band's activity slowed. He remained associated with that particular era of axé music from Bahia.
