Hungarica formed in 1986 as a Hungarian folk music band during a period of political and social change in the country. They worked with traditional folk songs but brought contemporary elements to them, which created some tension with purists who felt they were diluting the tradition. The band argued that innovation was necessary to keep the music relevant.

Their debut album 'Adjunk Esélyt' came out in 1990, and its title track became a hit that brought them national attention. That song, along with others like 'Átverés' and 'Demokrátúra,' helped establish their sound, traditional Hungarian folk music with modern arrangements that appealed to a broader audience. They toured extensively in Hungary and abroad throughout the 1990s.

Some critics questioned their approach, particularly when they incorporated English lyrics into their songs. Hungarica maintained that respecting tradition didn't mean avoiding innovation, and they continued performing and recording with that philosophy. Their catalog includes songs like 'Él és Virul' and 'Emlékezz' that reflect this blend of old and new.
