Hypergear formed in Kanagawa, Japan in 1986 with Manabu Shimada on vocals and bass, Kenji Miura on guitar, and Masao Yamada on drums. Their debut album 'Air [1st Zone]' came out the following year, and its title track became something of an anthem in Japanese melodic metal circles. They followed it with albums like 'One and Only' and 'Distant Thunder' over the next few years.
Shimada's arrest for drug possession in 1992 led to a hiatus, but the band regrouped after he served his sentence. They kept recording through the 1990s, with songs like 'Buzz' and 'Heavy Ricochet' showing their blend of catchy melodies and driving rhythms. Hypergear called it quits in 2001.
