I Love Pagode formed in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1990s, with four friends who shared an interest in pagode, a style that grew out of the city's suburbs. Their first album came out in 1998 and included '300 Dias,' a song that caught on quickly and helped establish them nationally. The original members were Alexandre Pires, Fernando Pires, Leandro Lehart, and Márcio Art.
Alexandre Pires left in 2002 to work on his own material, but the group kept going. Over time, other musicians joined, like Rodrigo Travassos on guitar and Wallace Carvalho on percussion. They've put out records fairly regularly, including live albums from 2000 and 2008, and a 2013 release marking fifteen years together.
Songs like 'Cicatriz,' 'Conversa Errada,' and 'Pagode do I Love' show their approach to the genre, which tends toward upbeat rhythms and straightforward, sentimental lyrics. There was some legal discussion around '300 Dias' at one point, though the details are murky. They're still known for that early hit and for maintaining a presence in Brazilian pagode.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
