Their name stood for "Invasion Armée Martienne," or Martian Invasion Army, which gave a sense of their ambitious, outsider perspective. The collective was led by rapper Akhenaton and included members like Shurik'n, Khéops, Imhotep, and Freeman.

Their debut album "IAM Concept" arrived in 1991, establishing them in French hip-hop. They followed with records like "Ombre est Lumière" in 1993 and "L'École du Micro d'Argent" in 1997.

One of their most recognizable tracks is "Je Danse Le Mia" from 1994, which blended Arabic melodies with hip-hop beats. Other songs like "L'enfer" and "Petit Frère" became part of their catalog. IAM's music connected with audiences in Marseille and across France, particularly among younger listeners.
