Ian (Huge) formed in Manchester in 1976 with Ian Curtis on vocals, Bernard Sumner on guitar, Peter Hook on bass, and Stephen Morris on drums. Their name came from the science fiction novel 'Dune.' They released their first album 'Unknown Pleasures' in 1979, followed by 'Closer' in 1980.
Curtis's baritone voice and lyrics often dealt with personal turmoil, heard on songs like 'Do It Right This Time.' The band's sound mixed post-punk with new wave elements, creating what some described as ethereal soundscapes.
Curtis died in 1980 at age 23, and the band disbanded shortly after. Their two albums, particularly 'Closer' with its darker tone, remained influential despite their brief recording career.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
