Archive material and source history
Igreja Batista began as a church choir in Rio de Janeiro sometime in the mid-20th century. The group included Pastor José Carlos Costa on lead vocals, Maestro João Carlos Costa as musical director, and vocalists Janete Costa and Jussara Costa. They started locally, singing for their congregation before reaching a wider audience.
Their 1978 album "É Maravilhoso" gave them their most recognizable song, which became popular in churches and worship services. Other recordings followed, like "Santo, Santo, Santo" in 1983 and a live album in 1993. Their music often mixed traditional hymns with Brazilian rhythms, heard in songs such as "Aliança Eterna" and "Pescador."
By 2003, they marked 25 years with a compilation called "25 Anos de Louvor." Their straightforward approach to worship music, built around family voices and familiar melodies, kept them active in Brazilian Christian circles for decades.
