Editor's note

Iida Kaori's piano, paralysis, and quiet return

A singer-songwriter from Nara whose career was shaped by a sudden illness and a public fall.

For a sense of her early sound, try 'Sakura No Hana Ga Saku Goro'. The later 'Arifureta Kiseki' might hint at the recovery years.

Her debut single 'Sakura No Hana Ga Saku Goro' was a hit in 2001, but her story isn't just about early success. She wrote songs about her experience with Guillain-Barré syndrome after it paralyzed her in 2004, and later navigated a drug arrest and rehab. Songs like 'Downtown' and 'Mirai Yohou' from that first period feel different knowing what came after.

She started with classical piano at three and later studied shamisen and koto. After her debut hit in 2001, her life shifted with the 2004 diagnosis and the 2008 arrest, before she returned with the 2010 album 'Haru no Tsubame'.
