Editor's note

Ike and Tina Turner's raw, high-energy soul revue.

A partnership built on Southern club grit and Tina's explosive stage power, strained by turmoil behind the scenes.

For the sheer force of it, listen to 'River Deep, Mountain High.' For where it all began, there's 'A Fool In Love.'

They turned the Southern club circuit into a launchpad for a sound that was all sweat and soul. 'A Fool In Love' broke them into the top 10 in 1960, but it was the live revue, Tina's voice tearing through songs like 'River Deep, Mountain High', that defined their pull. That energy, and the darker story behind it, is why the name sticks.

They started as the Ike & Tina Turner Revue on the club circuit in the late '50s. After 'A Fool In Love' hit, their high-energy mix of soul, blues, and rock kept the shows running until the partnership ended with their divorce in 1976.

Ike and Tina Turner started as the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, a live act that built its reputation on the Southern club circuit in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Tina Turner, born Anna Mae Bullock, had been singing with Ike Turner's band, the Kings of Rhythm, before their partnership formally began. Their first major hit came in 1960 with "A Fool In Love," which broke into the Billboard top 10.

Their sound mixed soul, blues, and rock 'n' roll into a high-energy revue format. The Revue was known for its intense live performances, with Tina's raw vocal power and kinetic stage presence becoming its centerpiece.

Behind the scenes, the partnership was strained by Ike Turner's reported abuse and controlling behavior, which Tina would later describe in her autobiography. The couple divorced in 1976, ending their musical collaboration. Tina Turner went on to rebuild her career as a solo artist in the 1980s, while Ike continued to perform and record with varying success until his death in 2007.
