Ikoko formed in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, where a group of musicians came together around a shared interest in expression. Their song 'Swing All the Colors' became their breakout single when it appeared on their 2011 debut album Ya Bosa Ngai.
Their lineup included lead vocalist and songwriter Dieudonné 'Didi' Nyemboka, guitarist and arranger Franck 'Yatou' Mwete, bassist Alain 'Ya' Kimbuangu, and drummer Rodrigue 'Rod' Mayengo. They released two more albums after their debut: Safari in 2014 and Biso Na Biso in 2018.
Some critics have taken issue with aspects of Ikoko's music, though the specifics of those disagreements aren't detailed here.
