Ilbeltz formed in 1982 with Xabier Amuriza on vocals and guitar, Xabier Montoia on drums, and Mikel Artola on bass. They were later joined by accordionist Arkaitz Miner and guitarist Felipe Ugarte. Their name translates to 'the smoke of the forest' in Basque.
Their debut album 'Linbreak' came out in 1984, followed by records like 'Hamaika Gau' in 1987, 'Lege Zaharrak' in 1990, and 'Karmele' in 1993. The song 'Helduiak Buztanetio Moteil' became particularly well-known.
Their lyrics often addressed social and political themes, which sometimes drew criticism. They wrote in Basque and incorporated traditional melodies alongside rock and jazz elements.
