Ildemar Almeida was born in Pilão Arcado, Bahia in 1966. He started singing in his local church choir and later moved to Salvador to pursue music. In the early 1990s, he formed the band Ildemar Almeida e Grupo with other musicians.
Their 1997 single "Jesus Estão No Barco" became a national hit in Brazil. The band released several albums including 'O Barco de Noé' in 1997 and 'Arca da Aliança' in 1999. Their music often dealt with themes of faith and social issues.
Almeida's lyrics sometimes drew criticism from conservative groups, but he continued writing songs that addressed social concerns. The band included members like Ednaldo Sena on bass and Juarez Fonseca on drums.
