Archive material and source history
Ildo Martins came from Duque de Caxias in Rio de Janeiro, where he learned to play the cavaquinho. His music drew from samba and bossa nova, along with the protest songs that were circulating in Brazil during the 1960s.
In the early 1970s, he began working with lyricist Roberto Riberti. Together they wrote 'Filhos da Liberdade,' which came out in 1975. The song became an anthem during Brazil's period of military rule, and it gave Martins the nickname 'O Cantor da Liberdade.'
Martins kept recording through the late 1970s and into the 1980s, putting out albums like 'Identidade' and 'A Vida É Samba.' His music sometimes mixed in rock and reggae, but it stayed grounded in Brazilian rhythms and in the themes he'd always touched on.
