Archive material and source history
Illinois formed in Chicago in 1970 with Dan Fogelberg on vocals and guitar, John Mehler on bass, Jim Mason on drums, and David Pack on keyboards. Pack, who had played with Steely Dan, wrote much of their material. Their self-titled debut came out in 1971, but it was the 1974 album 'Headin' for the Future' that really put them on the map.
The single 'Alone Again' from that album went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Fogelberg's vocal on that track, along with songs like 'Hang On' and 'Broken String,' gave the band a folk-rock sound that connected with a lot of listeners in the mid-70s.
Fogelberg left the group in 1975, and Illinois carried on as a trio, putting out records like 'Night Moves' in 1975 and 'Forever' in 1981. They never quite matched the success of the 'Alone Again' period, and the band eventually broke up.
